Lesson #6
PROCEDURES
OPENER Students will be instructed to open the Unit 9 Vocab List and the Unit 9 Vocab Sentences Assignment on Edmodo (paper copies will be available to students who need one). Two student penned sentences will be shown on the PB—I will point out that these sentences are insufficient to show the meaning of the word (was there proof that you broke the laptop? Why would a total coward hurt a baby—maybe to protect themself, not for no reason?). I will give students 10 minutes to write their own sentences and then share what they wrote for the first two (I will use the box timer to stay on track). I will write the new sentences on the board if the pen is working. The rest of this assignment is homework, due before the quiz on Wednesday. During this time, I will circulate and make sure students are on track; I will also check in with them on the paragraphs that were due Sunday.
BODY OF THE LESSON Students will then open the “Privilege Quiz” on Edmodo (paper copies as needed) and take the quiz to the best of their ability. I will walk around and check their scores. (If their scores are completely random, I may skip the line up described next). I will ask the class to get up and line up according to their scores, low scores at one end and high at the other. We can then see if the break down is related to gender. If not, we can still discuss the content of the questions and I can point out the male privilege bias inherent in them, using an image of the US presidents to illustrate and reviewing the main concepts associated with patriarchy. I will then introduce the idea of signal phrases and try to explain why they are important (to show that someone else’s ideas are being used, to give some context to how they intended you to read their ideas, to distinguish their ideas from your own). I will do an example of summarizing a quote using a signal phrase, then hand out papers on which students write 5 summaries with signal phrases. I will circulate and check their work as they write.
CLOSURE This will likely take the whole period; they may continue the vocab sentences if they finish this correctly before the period ends.
ACCOMODATIONS Students will work in groups and as a class. All information presented will be given to them in the handouts as well as on the PB.
ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION Student participation in class will be recorded. Their summary practice work and vocab sentences will be graded for completion.
