Lesson #5
RATIONALE Students have watching “Still Killing Us Softly” and discussed analyzing images using the feminist lens. They have chosen images, completed a gallery walk, and begun to brainstorm applications of the lens to their images. We will continue to develop their media analysis skills by focusing on evidence identification and analysis in this lesson.
PROCEDURES
OPENER Students will be instructed to open the Unit 9 Vocab Relationships assignment. I will overview the instructions, set the timer for 5 minutes, then write and revise student examples on the board. They will finish this work for homework.
BODY OF THE LESSON We will go over characteristics of good evidence in contrast to opinions or analysis. Students will receive a handout and use it to record evidence they see in an advertisement I project to the class. I will then go around the room and have each student share one thing they saw in the ad that they think would make good evidence. As they share, I will compliment what worked in their example and critique what they said that does not fit the evidence requirements, sometimes asking them to look at the ad again and be more specific. After this, they will be asked to open their own image on their computers and to do the bottom half of the sheet, identifying evidence in their ad. They will then use this evidence for step three of the analysis assignment.
CLOSURE I will check in with each student to make sure they are completing these steps appropriately and choosing usable evidence. I will then ask students to begin writing their paragraphs at home, using the two best pieces of evidence they found that most support their claim.
ACCOMODATIONS Students will work in individually and as a class. All information presented will be given to them in the handouts as well as on the PB. Information is organized on a graphic organizer for clarity and ease of use.
ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION Student participation in class will be recorded. Their evidence sheet will be marked according to the instructions, and the steps will not be graded but will be used to orient them before they write their paragraphs. The vocab relationship assignment will be graded according to the instructions as well.
