Lesson #22
RATIONALE Students have been outlining their essays for the past few days. This class will be used to revise outlines and begin translating them into writing with the body paragraph templates. We will look various claim/evidence combinations to assess their success in order to help students evaluate and edit their own work before progressing with the essay.
PROCEDURES
OPENER As we begin, I will ask student to evaluate the claims they have chosen for their first body paragraph, an assessment of what the main character wants through an application of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. We will look at this pyramid together and discuss why it would make sense to chose a higher echelon desire from a feminist perspective. We will also discuss choosing quotes that develop an argument: chronologically, order of importance, severity, etc.
BODY OF THE LESSON I will show students "poor analysis/quote combinations" and we will discuss choosing quotes that can directly support your claim rather than analyzing a quote that doesn't specifically support your claim. We will also look at more successful examples. I will then explain the body paragraph template to students and model its use on the Promethean Board.
CLOSURE I will circulate and check on students work to make sure they understand how to use the body paragraph template. I will also make sure their outlines are sufficient and will assist them in moving forward in their writing.
ACCOMODATIONS Students will work as a full class and individually. All information presented will be given to them in the handouts as well as on the PB. Information is organized on a graphic organizer for clarity and ease of use.
ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION Student participation points will be marked this period. I do not intend to grade their body paragraphs but rather intended it as an organizing tool for their essay.
