Lesson #4
RATIONALE Students have watching “Still Killing Us Softly” and discussed analyzing images using the feminist lens. They have chosen images, which I turned into a gallery walk to give them the opportunity to see each other’s images and analyze them as a class before working individually. This is significant because this class is not used to discussion, and I am trying to find ways to introduce it slowly, such as this.
PROCEDURES
OPENER Students will be instructed to open the Unit 9 Vocab List on Edmodo. I will introduce the next five words, have students repeat the word and share the definition, and then set the timer for 5 minutes while students take the Vocab Do Now quiz on Edmodo.
BODY OF THE LESSON I will introduce the gallery walk assignment and review the feminist perspective chart again. We will discuss appropriate kinds of comments they might write (outlined on the PowerPoint). Then I will set the timer for three minutes and instruct students to go to any station they want, decide which category it best fits into (misogyny, sexism, etc.), write a comment, and initial it, moving to the next station at the buzzer. After four or five stations, I’ll stop them and instruct them to go to the station they are most interested, circle another student’s comment, and respond to it, then be seated. When they’re back, we will overview the paragraph assignment they will write about the ad they’ve chosen and complete steps 1-3 in the packet.
CLOSURE I will check in with each student to make sure they are completing these steps appropriately, and I’ll ask for feedback on the gallery walk.
ACCOMODATIONS Students will work in individually and as a class. All information presented will be given to them in the handouts as well as on the PB. Information is organized on a graphic organizer for clarity and ease of use.
ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION Student participation in class will be recorded. Their comments will be marked according to the instructions, and the steps will not be graded but will be used to orient them before they write their paragraphs. The Edmodo quiz will grade automatically according to their answers.
